Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and many small engagements were fought near Kingston at Bear Bluff and Black Lake. Francis Marion, known as the "Swamp Fox" had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River.
After the war, patriotic citizens rallied together and changed the name to Conway borough after General Robert Conway. It then became a bustling . naval stores with the production of tar, pitch and turpentine and became the premier river port occupation of area residents.
The town's name was shortened to Conway in 1883 and in 1887 the railway reached the town and in 1898 the first mayor was elected and located in the center of town is the Horry County Museum and Courthouse.
